The Big Box is a sister company of La Grosse Boite, a boardgames café in La Rochelle on the Atlantic coast in France. After a six-year run in the European town, the company spread it’s wings and so, in 2015, two more shops were born; on in Rochefort, France and the other right here in Gardens, Cape Town. The people behind The Big Box are passionate about gaming and are always excited to be part of projects where people can share, learn, discover and have fun in the big and exciting world of board games.
Emilie and Eric are the French co-founders of The Big Box Café in the Mother City. Their Cape Town adventure began in 2009 when they ran different board game events in and around different bars, restaurants, book shops and schools around the city as well as the Cape Town Science Centre which has ultimately lead to the opening of The Big Box Boardgames Café which can be found at 18 Roeland Street in Gardens.
South Africa, although in the past with a limited board game offering, is bursting with opportunity and many people are happy to discover new entertainment in the form of games. This beautiful country also has a history plagued with decades of walls being built to separate it’s people and now is the time to continue to build strong bridges. This board games cafe is on of those bridges; bringing people of all kinds together to enjoy a delightful game or two in a light-hearted and friendly setting.
The Big Box not only imports games from Europe but is also committed to creating and developing games made right here in the Republic of South Africa. The games on offer change frequently, meaning that you can come across a new game each time you come to visit the café!
